Survey Your Home
Once a hurricane has passed and it is safe to move around, carefully inspect your home and property for damage and hazards. Even after the storm ends, unsafe conditions may still exist both inside and outside your home.
Inside Your Home
Begin by checking the inside of your home for signs of structural damage, water intrusion, or electrical hazards.
Look for:
- Water leaks or moisture on walls, ceilings, and floors
- Mold or mildew beginning to develop
- Broken windows or damaged doors
- Loose ceiling materials or weakened structures
- Damage near electrical outlets or appliances
If your home experienced flooding or water intrusion, ventilate the area as soon as possible by opening doors and windows when weather conditions allow. Drying out affected areas early can help reduce mold growth.
Use caution when plugging appliances back in if your home has suffered water damage. If you suspect electrical damage, contact a qualified professional before plugging anything in.
Outside Your Home
Inspect the outside of your property carefully before beginning cleanup activities.
Check for:
- Fallen branches or unstable trees
- Loose roofing materials or damaged gutters
- Flooding or standing water
- Sharp debris, broken glass, or exposed nails
- Damage to fences, outdoor structures, or utility connections
Standing water should be removed as quickly as possible to help reduce mosquito breeding areas. When cleaning debris, ensure you wear the proper clothing and protective equipment such as gloves and safety glasses.
Do not attempt to remove large debris or unstable structures yourself. Contact the appropriate authorities or professionals if assistance is needed.
Check on Neighbors and Family
After ensuring your own household is safe, take time to check on neighbors, family members, and friends who may need assistance, especially elderly residents, persons living alone, or individuals with medical needs.
Community support is an important part of hurricane recovery and can help identify urgent needs more quickly after a storm.
