Last year, the Public Entity took part in WWF-Earth Hour by turning off the lights of the government administration building. This was done as a symbol of commitment to the planet, to raise awareness on the responsible use of electricity and to support efforts to tackle climate change locally and globally. On Saturday, March 22nd, from 8:30 – 9:30 PM, the Public Entity will once again take part in this global event. For this, we will be turning off the inside and outside lights of the administration building. The Public Entity encourages residents, businesses and other local organizations to also take part by switching off the lights of your homes, businesses and other buildings.
Saba Electric Company will also take part in this initiative as was done last year as a show of solidarity. For this, they will turn off the inside and outside lights of their main office building and some of the street lights in various parts of the island. Its power plant will remain on to still supply electricity to the island. As a responsible energy company, SEC has already started with the transition to green energy with its 2 solar parks in order to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Earth Hour is an annual initiative of the international World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It first started in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, where some 2.2 million people turned off their lights. In 2008, around 50 million people in 35 different countries around the world participated in the second Earth Hour. The number of participants and participating countries have since continued to grow. In participating in this initiative again, the Public Entity reconfirms its commitment to addressing climate change.
