World Food Day Event 2024

This week, World Food Day was celebrated around the world, with the chosen theme for this year being “Right to foods for a better life and a better future”. This theme emphasizes the importance of a greater diversity of nutritious foods that should be available for all.

This year, the Public Entity Saba will host its World Food Day celebration in December, to coincide with the completion of various improvements and new initiatives at the Hydroponics Farm where the event will also be held. This event will showcase many important projects on Saba which focus on improving sustainability on island and preparing Saba for the future. This will be done through various presentations and a market hosting various booths with locally-made products on sale.

Several projects currently being carried out by the PES maintain the goal of making Saba more self-sufficient. One of the ways in which we can do this is by increasing our food security. Through the Nature and Environmental Policy Plan (NEPP), a solid foundation is given to construct programs for local food security initiatives. With the newly expanded capacity at the Hydroponics Farm, this will then be an opportune moment for the Saban community to gather and view the many initiatives on the island which contribute to local food security.

More detailed information will be made available to the public leading up to the event.

We welcome members of the community who wish to feature their goods at the event to reach out to PES by sending an email to nike.dekkers@sabagov.nl to be included in the planning.

World Food Day is celebrated yearly around the world on October 16. It commemorates the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945. The mission of the FAO is to combat hunger and achieve food security through the sustainable development of agriculture and careful use of the earth’s natural resources.
