Held on March 8, 2025, the event served as a dynamic platform for discussing actionable solutions to critical issues facing women today, including economic empowerment, leadership representation, and social justice. With an impressive lineup of speakers, attendees were encouraged to move beyond conversation and take bold, decisive steps toward lasting change.
The evening opened with a warm welcome speech from Island Council Member Elsa Peterson, setting the tone for an engaging and thought-provoking gathering. This was followed by a motivational speech from Ms. Ramona Berkel, Domestic Safety Advisor, who emphasized the importance of safety, empowerment, and resilience in advancing women's rights.
The highlight of the evening was a compelling keynote address by The Honorable First Lady of Saint Kitts, Mrs. Diani Prince-Drew, titled “A Call to Accelerate Action.” She urged participants to commit to tangible actions that would accelerate gender equality across all sectors.
“As we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, the many daring women who fought for fundamental rights and freedoms such as voting rights, fair wages, education, and political representation, we must ask ourselves: What more can we do? How can we accelerate the pace of change? The answer lies in collective and decisive action, in refusing to accept incremental progress when bold and immediate transformation is what is needed,” Prince-Drew stated.
This year, instead of awarding five outstanding women for their impactful contributions, we chose to honor twenty-nine women who are no longer with us, but whose legacies continue to shape the lives of women in Saba today. Their names were called, in tribute and remembrance, ensuring that their immense contributions were not forgotten. The energy in the room was deeply moving, in memory of these remarkable women who paved the way for us all.
As the event drew to a close, Mrs. Rosalyn Johnson, Head of the Community Development & Culture Department, delivered a heartfelt message:
“At the Community Development & Culture Department, we believe that change happens when action is prioritized. The momentum from today’s event must continue beyond International Women’s Day, inspiring individuals and organizations to make concrete commitments that advance gender parity.”
The ‘Accelerate Action’ event concluded on a high note, with attendees enjoying refreshments, entertainment, and an atmosphere of unity and celebration. The vibrant discussions, the shared energy, and the unshakable commitment to change have left a lasting impact on everyone present, including several men from the community who stood in solidarity, proving that inclusion is essential in the fight for gender equality. Their presence also reinforced the message that real progress happens when everyone is involved, supporting the supporters.
This event showcased a movement, a celebration of power, beauty, and action, marking International Women’s Day on Saba as an unforgettable one.
Thank you to everyone who made this event a massive success!
Let’s continue to Accelerate Action, together!
