Saba, St. Eustatius, and Sint Maarten Officially Sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) | Slavery Past Action Agenda

Today marks an important milestone in regional collaboration as the Public Entity Saba, Public Entity St. Eustatius, and the Government of Sint Maarten formalized their regional collaboration on Friday, October 16, 2026, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project "Slavery Past Action Agenda: Genetic Legacies of Slavery and Poverty of Saba, Sint Eustatius, and Sint Maarten."

The MoU was signed by Commissioner Eviton Heyliger on behalf of Public Entity Saba, Commissioner Reuben Merkman on behalf of Public Entity St. Eustatius, and Minister Melissa Gumbs on behalf of the Government of Sint Maarten. The signing formalizes the commitment of the three governments to advancing genealogical and related scientific research across the islands.

The collaboration recognizes the importance of documenting ancestral histories and supporting a better understanding of the shared past of Saba, St. Eustatius, and Sint Maarten. Through genealogical research, digital archives, and oral histories, the project seeks to help descendants trace family histories and ancestral connections.

By working together with research institutions and universities, the three governments aim to support community participation in the research and establish a lasting record of shared heritage for future generations.
