Prioritizing Road Safety on Saba

Ensuring safety on Saba’s roads has the full attention of the Island Governor, Chief Public Prosecutor, Chief of Police, and the Brigade-Commander of the KMar.

These officials convene every two months to discuss strategic matters concerning public order, safety, and law enforcement. In its most recent meeting, it was decided to prioritize enforcement in relation to road safety and issue the following joint statement:

“In the past year, the community has witnessed an increase in the number of motorcycles and scooters on our roads, along with various reckless and dangerous traffic situations. It has been observed that some drivers are underage, unlicensed, or not wearing helmets. There have also been instances of drinking and driving, highlighting the need for continued attention and action on this issue.

These actions not only break the law but endanger the drivers themselves, other road users, and bystanders. Public order is also being disrupted, with noise pollution and nuisance complaints frequently reported due to street racing, speeding, and stunts.

Due to the growing incidence of these, enforcement will also intensify as we seek to prevent any further dangerous situations from arising. Compliance will be ensured through more traffic checks by the KPCN.

We urge all residents to take caution when operating cars, motorcycles, or scooters. We also call on parents and community members to speak with young people about the risks and potential consequences of reckless driving—not just for themselves, but for their families, friends, and the wider community.

Each of us shares responsibility for making Saba's roads safer. By working together, staying vigilant, and making responsible choices, we can protect lives and maintain the safe and peaceful community we all value.

Let’s work together to make road safety a priority for everyone.”
