Disaster Management Team Holds Preparatory Meeting Ahead of 2025 Hurricane Season

The Disaster Management Team of Saba convened on Wednesday, May 7th, for a preparatory session for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

The meeting was opened and chaired by Island Governor Jonathan Johnson, who thanked all Emergency Support Function (ESF) coordinators for being present. Each ESF represented a partner in the disaster management team, such as the police, fire department, public works, public health, and the ports. The Governor emphasized the importance of readiness and planning.

During the session, all ESF coordinators provided updates on their respective hurricane preparedness plans. The team also discussed outstanding matters requiring attention and reviewed upcoming public awareness campaigns to inform and prepare the community.

Team Leader and Meteorologist Jos Diepeveen from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) also participated, delivering a presentation on the seasonal outlook.

Forecasters predict an average hurricane season, without El Niño or La Niña circumstances affecting the season. The Island Governor stressed to his team that “it only takes one hurricane”. The Disaster Management Team therefore urges all residents to take early action to safeguard themselves and their properties.

Important reminders for the community:

  • Clear debris in and around your yard.
  • Prepare your hurricane kit early.
  • Rely on official sources for all emergency updates concerning Saba.
  • As always, we encourage everyone to be prepared.
