The Black Rocks Harbor Project was presented at Waterbouwdag 2026, an annual conference in the Netherlands that brings together professionals, researchers, and industry experts to exchange knowledge and discuss developments in hydraulic engineering and water management.
Held in Utrecht on Thursday, October 29, 2026, the conference provided Peter Biemond, Project Manager of the Black Rocks Harbor Project, and Ton van der Plas, Technical Manager, representing the Public Entity Saba, with an opportunity to present Saba's harbor development to an international audience of industry professionals and experts.
This year's conference focused on the theme “Hydraulic Engineering in a Global Perspective” and offered a platform to showcase the Black Rocks Harbor Project as an important infrastructure development for Saba.
The presentation provided an overview of the project's journey, starting from the 2017 hurricanes, the initiation of testing and the early investigative stages to the current design development and construction phase. It highlighted the various steps taken to advance the project, the technical considerations and challenges involved, and the importance of developing a harbor that takes Saba's unique geographical and environmental conditions into account.
The development of the Black Rocks Harbor is an important project for the Public Entity Saba, aimed at improving maritime accessibility, strengthening the island's infrastructure, and supporting its long-term economic development.
The project represents a significant investment in Saba's future, recognizing the vital role that reliable harbor infrastructure plays in strengthening connectivity and supporting the island's overall development.
As work on the Black Rocks Harbor Project continues to progress, one of the recent developments has been the successful placement of the first 27 X-blocs into the water, marking an important milestone in the construction phase.
Participating in Waterbouwdag 2026 also provided an opportunity to share Saba's experiences and the progress of the project with an international audience, exchange insights, and connect with professionals involved in similar hydraulic engineering and infrastructure projects.
