Major Hurricane Erin is now located north of Puerto Rico and continues to move further away from the region. As the system progresses northwestwards, the overall threat to the island of Saba has significantly decreased.
Winds remain southerly and strong this morning, at force 6, with speeds ranging from 25 to 31 miles per hour (39 to 49 kilometers per hour). During passing showers, gusts may reach between 38 and 50 miles per hour (60 to 80 kilometers per hour). Through the course of the afternoon and evening, winds will gradually ease to moderate levels, force 4 to 5, with speeds between 13 and 18 miles per hour (20 to 28 kilometers per hour).
Marine conditions continue to be moderate to rough, with seas in the range of 5 to 8 feet. There remains a small risk of rough seas reaching 8 to 10 feet, with the highest waves coming from the southwest and south. Conditions are expected to gradually improve on Monday as seas decrease to between 3 and 5 feet.
Rainfall across the island has already ranged from 25 millimeters to isolated amounts of up to 150 millimeters (1 to isolated 6 inches) on Saturday. Today, further rainfall amounts of up to 25 millimeters (1 inch) are expected. There is a small risk of additional isolated rainfall between 25 and 50 millimeters (1 to 2 inches). Due to the already saturated ground, the risk of flash flooding, urban flooding, and landslides or mudslides remains, particularly in vulnerable areas.
Residents are advised to continue exercising caution, especially while traveling. During periods of heavy rainfall or strong winds, the public is encouraged to remain indoors and to check on vulnerable members of the community, particularly the elderly, when weather conditions are calm and it is safe to do so.
This will be the final official update on Hurricane Erin for Saba, as the system continues to move away from the island and no further significant impacts are expected.
Authorities will continue to monitor general weather conditions and provide further notices if necessary.
