Removal of Feral Cats

The Public Entity wishes to notify the general public that removal of feral cats will continue island wide. After a successful mission in the St John’s area, removal of feral cats will be expanded to other areas in which feral cats are known to roam, as well as around the nesting sites of red-billed tropic birds.

Cats form a threat to the survival of indigenous animal species on Saba, like the red-billed tropic bird, anoles and other small wildlife. As feral cats reproduce fast, cat populations form an increasing threat to the wildlife on the island if no measures are taken. The Public Entity aims to reduce the predation pressure from cats by targeted removal around bird nesting sites and hotspots with high numbers of feral cats. In inhabited areas, feral cats will be captured with box traps, while around nesting sites both box traps and soft traps will be used, both of which capture the animals alive and cause no physical harm. Non-microchipped adults will be euthanized. For cats displaying typical domestic behavior, a grace period of 5 days will be observed to allow individuals to claim responsibility for the cat or to provide the opportunity for rehoming. Captured kittens will be raised and rehomed if possible, with assistance of the SFPCA.

Cat owners are urged to make sure that their cats are microchipped and registered in accordance with the Island Ordinance on identification and registration of livestock and pets.

The SFPCA offers free microchipping for pets. This can be arranged via the island veterinarian. The clinic has regular opening hours every Monday from 5-7 pm and can be reached by phone via 416 7947. While the placement of the microchip is done for free, the accompanying registration comes with the regular fee ($10 for spayed/neutered animals, $100 for non-spayed/neutered animals).

If you are interested in adopting a cat or kitten, please contact the clinic who works closely with SFPCA and can help facilitate adoption.
