Weather Update: Hurricane Erin Nears Closest Point to Saba

Major Hurricane Erin reached its closest point to Saba as a Category 5 hurricane and is moving away westward.

The risk of experiencing tropical storm–force winds (32 miles per hour or more, or 50 kilometers per hour) is now considered negligible. Although some residual gusts may still be felt, sustained winds of 25 to 30 miles per hour (approximately 45 kilometers per hour), with occasional gusts up to 40 miles per hour (60 kilometers per hour), are expected to gradually diminish as the system continues to move away. There is no longer any expectation of hurricane-force winds directly affecting Saba.

Heavy rainfall remains a concern, More than 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain has already been recorded, and total rainfall accumulations could reach 150 to 250 millimeters (6 to 10 inches). These conditions may continue to result in flash flooding, urban flooding, and possible landslides or mudslides, particularly in vulnerable or already saturated areas.

Marine conditions remain rough, with seas ranging from 5 to 8 feet. There is also a small but significant risk of wave heights increasing to 8 to 10 feet today and into Sunday. Northeasterly swells may continue to impact coastal areas, making marine and shoreline conditions hazardous.

The public is advised to exercise caution, especially on the roads. Wet and slippery surfaces, combined with poor visibility and the potential for debris or localized slides, present ongoing driving hazards. Non-essential travel should be avoided, and any movement postponed until conditions improve.

Residents are strongly urged to monitor official updates, secure their homes and surroundings, and check in on vulnerable members of the community, particularly the elderly. While adverse conditions are expected to persist throughout the remainder of the day, gradual improvement is anticipated beginning Sunday.

Authorities continue to monitor Major Hurricane Erin closely and will issue further official updates as the situation develops. For accurate information and preparedness guidance, please visit the official government website at: www.sabagov.nl/.../disaste.../hurricane-preparedness
