As development continues, preserving this distinctive character remains a shared responsibility. Building regulations play an important role in safeguarding not only Saba’s visual identity, but also the safety, quality, and livability of all structures. These regulations ensure comfortable interior spaces with adequate daylight and ventilation, while also considering their impact on the surrounding environment, including appropriate spacing between buildings and along roadways.
Saba’s growth and development are important, and when done thoughtfully, they can support both the protection of the island’s cultural heritage and natural beauty while ensuring future building respects and preserves what makes Saba so special.
The Infrastructure & Spatial Planning Department kindly reminds all residents and contractors that building and demolition activities must comply with the applicable permitting regulations.
This reminder is intended to clarify when permits are required, outline the application process, and encourage those who have already started or completed construction without a permit to apply.
An inventory of construction activities on the island was conducted in September 2025 as stated in the previous reminder. An ongoing inventory of the construction activities on the island has shown that construction is still taking place without permits or outside approved plans. This inventory helps to ensure that all development taking place on Saba is properly documented and in line with existing regulations.
We kindly remind the public that if construction occurs without a permit or deviates from the approved plans/drawings, the owner will receive a notice requesting them to submit a building permit application for the ongoing construction or a request to resubmit a permit application with the updated plans/drawings.
Ultimately, the permitting process helps to protect our communities while preserving the unique charm of our Unspoiled Queen. Through shared responsibility, we can ensure that Saba’s distinctive character continues to be enjoyed by current and future generations.
