Weather Update: Tropical Storm Erin

Tropical Storm Erin continues its projected path to pass north-northeast of Saba as a Category 2 hurricane on Saturday afternoon. Residents are advised to prepare for adverse weather conditions this weekend.

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) reports that Erin is expected to pass about 180 miles (285 kilometers) north-northeast of Saba at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 16.

The possibility of experiencing tropical storm–force winds remain low at 10 to 15%. Current forecasts mention sustained winds at Force 6, with gusts between 40 and 45 miles per hour (60 to 75 kilometers per hour), accompanied by a high chance of strong thunderstorms. Sea conditions are expected to be moderate to rough with northeast swells. Rainfall totals are estimated to be between 1 and 3 inches (25 to 75 millimeters), with a 5 to 10 percent chance of up to 4 inches (100 millimeters). Such rainfall could trigger isolated flash floods, localized urban flooding, and possible landslides or mudslides.

Accessability to Saba’s roads may be limited this weekend due to weather conditions. Residents are therefore advised to do their required shopping today. Travel to and from Saba will not be possible on Saturday 16 August and uncertain in the upcoming days. Winair cancelled all its flights to and from Saba on Saturday 16 August. Charter flights are likely to be cancelled as well. The Makana Ferry Service cancelled all its routes on Saturday and its afternoon routes on Sunday August 17. Please check your itinerary if you have travel plans for the weekend.

The public is further reminded to remain alert and take precautionary measures ahead of the approaching system. Residents should ensure that their homes and surroundings are secure, stay informed through official channels, and check on neighbors, particularly those who may need assistance or have limited access to timely information.

Authorities will continue to monitor Erin closely and provide timely updates as conditions develop. For official guidance on hurricane preparedness, please visit: www.sabagov.nl/.../disaste.../hurricane-preparedness.
