Tropical Storm Erin is expected to intensify into a Category 2 hurricane in the coming days. Although the storm is currently forecast to pass north-northeast of Saba, residents are advised to prepare for severe weather conditions this weekend.
According to the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), Erin is currently projected to pass approximately 190 miles (305 kilometers) north-northeast of Saba at around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 16. However, weather impacts are expected to begin as early as Friday, August 15, and may continue through Monday, August 18.
At this time, there is a 20 to 25% chance of experiencing tropical storm-force winds. The probability of hurricane-force winds remains extremely low, estimated at 1 to 3%.
Forecasted conditions include strong winds reaching Force 6 levels, with gusts up to 40 miles per hour (60 kilometers per hour). Moderate to rough seas with northeast swells are expected, along with rainfall ranging from 1 to 3 inches (25 to 75 millimeters). Strong thunderstorms are also likely during this period.
Although the core of the storm is not expected to impact our island directly, the public is reminded to remain alert and take necessary precautions in advance of the approaching system. Residents should ensure that their homes and surroundings are secure, remain informed through official channels, and check in on neighbors, especially those who may need assistance or may not have access to timely information.
We will continue to monitor Erin and keep the public informed of relevant developments.
