Working Group Healthcare Emergency Response and Preparedness Convenes on Aruba

A delegation from the Public Entity Saba recently attended a program for the working group Healthcare Emergency Response and Preparedness, which convened in Aruba last week. The program focused on the overlap between the medical and crisis world, emphasizing the need to work together on medically related topics that could occur during a crisis event.

As standard participating members, the Head of Public Health and Sports, as point of contact for Emergency Support Function 6 ‘Medical Services’ (Menno Bakker) and Advisor on Crisis Management and Public Order and Safety (Shalini Bisram) attended.

The program included a regular work group meeting, during which the progress and status updates of some activities were discussed such as the actualization of a crisis manual on medical (pre- and post-) evacuation in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, and working on different scenarios. Additionally, a presentation and tour at the Crisis Management Office of Aruba was given. On the final day, the group visited the Dr. Horacio E. Oduber Hospital and Instituto Medico San Nicolas, with focus on crisis management and care for patients during and after a crisis.

The working group usually convenes digitally throughout the year, with one or two on site meetings per year. Earlier this year, Bakker and Bisram also shared developments from the working group during a visit from representatives of the Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature of Curacao.

Participants of this work group also included representatives with a crisis and medical background from the CAS and BES islands, and Zorg en Jeugd Caribisch Nederland (ZJCN) as part of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.
