Visit to the Koninklijk Eise Eisinga Planetarium

During Commissioner Eviton Heyliger’s time in the Netherlands, a visit took place to Franeker, along with Executive Assistant, Jayaira Windfield de Groot, and Island Council member Vito Charles, who also serves on the Saba Heritage Center Board.

The delegation toured the Koninklijk Eise Eisinga Planetarium, a renowned museum in the province of Friesland. The planetarium is internationally recognized as the oldest still-operational planetarium in the world, constructed by Eise Eisinga between 1774 and 1781. It presents a precise, mechanical scale model of the solar system that demonstrates the movement of the planets.

The visit included a guided tour led by the Director of the Planetarium, which was both informative and engaging, providing valuable insight into the historical, scientific, and cultural significance of the monument.

In addition to the planetarium visit, the delegation participated in a walk through the historic townscape of Franeker, guided by the Municipal Monuments Advisor. During this walk, several protected monuments and heritage sites were highlighted. The advisor explained the municipality’s approach to heritage preservation, which aims to maintain the original character and atmosphere of historic areas while carefully balancing modern needs such as roof extensions or larger windows with the preservation of architectural integrity and aesthetic value. This visit provided insight into the numerous ways that heritage sites can be protected, and ideas for various implementations on Saba.
