Steering Committee in The Hague Reviews Saba Package Progress; Milestones of Black Rocks Harbor Project Also Highlighted

On Thursday, June 14, a steering committee meeting was held in The Hague to review the progress of the Saba Package. The meeting brought together representatives from the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK), and the Public Entity Saba to assess developments and chart the path forward in key priority areas.

Attending the meeting from the Public Entity Saba were Island Governor Jonathan Johnson, Commissioner Bruce Zagers, and Head of the Project Bureau Nicole Johnson.

Discussions focused on several critical themes within the Saba Package, including connectivity, spatial planning, good governance, the physical domain, and food security. These themes are central to Saba’s sustainable development and reflect the island’s continued commitment to close cooperation with the Dutch government.

The steering committee continues to serve as a vital platform for monitoring progress and reinforcing the working relationship between the Public Entity Saba and the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations.

Building on this collaboration, a follow-up meeting was held the same day to specifically address the Black Rocks Harbor project, one of Saba’s most significant infrastructure undertakings.

This meeting focused on providing updates and strengthening inter-agency coordination on the harbor project. It was attended by representatives from the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK), IenW and Commissioner Bruce Zagers, Zelda Meeuwsen, Head of Infrastructural & Spatial Development, Nicole Johnson, Head of the Project Bureau and Project Manager Peter Biemond.

During the meeting, participants received a detailed briefing on the project’s current status. A notable milestone was the successful completion of the coral relocation project, reflecting the project's commitment to environmental stewardship. Another significant update was the presentation of initial results from the 3D model testing, conducted on Tuesday, June 10, in a specialized laboratory in the United Kingdom. The testing, witnessed by Commissioner Bruce Zagers provided valuable insights into the harbor’s design and structural resilience.

The meetings in The Hague not only demonstrated continued progress but also reaffirmed the strong cooperation between Saba and its national partners in the Netherlands as they work together to achieve tangible outcomes for the island and its people.

The Black Rocks Harbor project is a major infrastructure development initiative intended to provide resilience capacity for the already growing island.
