On Monday May 4th, the Committee met with Island Governor Johnson, Island Secretary Bram Streppel and the Head of the Public Health Department Menno Bakker to discuss challenges related to healthcare on the island and the need to strengthen various aspects of the current system. The delegation also met with Island Council members Elsa Peterson and Saskia Matthew who raised additional concerns, including how connectivity impacts access to healthcare services, the need for more accessible specialist care and more efficient patient referral systems.
A visit was made to the Saba Cares facility, where representatives from the hospital provided insight into how healthcare services are organized on the island. They highlighted the intermittent availability of specialized care, reliance and procedure medical evacuations, and challenges related to mental health service and dental care with particular emphasis on the burden of out-of-pocket costs. Limited access to affordable healthy food was also identified as an area of concern, in terms of preventative care.
In the afternoon, the group also attended the Memorial Day ceremony, where the community gathered to honor those who lost their lives during World War II.
The visit concluded with a meeting with Head of Community Development and Culture, Rosalyn Johnson, who gave insight into the ongoing work at the Social Domain. The delegation toured the Water Rock Center, where they received an overview of the shelter’s operations, the Social Services Unit and the team, youth development programs, and the implementation of the Social Support Act (WMO).
The Public Entity Saba expresses its appreciation to the Standing Committee for their visit and for the continued dialogue on important social and healthcare matters affecting the island.
