Social Workers on Saba Join Global Observance of Social Work Month 2026

During the month of March, Social Workers across the world commemorate Social Work Month, recognizing the profession’s dedication to helping individuals, families, and communities overcome social challenges and improve their well-being.

On Saba, Social Workers from the Community Development and Culture Department – Social Services Unit and Zorg en Jeugd Caribisch Nederland (ZJCN) are joining colleagues worldwide in observing Social Work Month 2026 under the international theme “Uplift, Defend, Transform.”

The theme reflects the core mandate of the social work profession. Social Workers have long moved beyond the traditional perception of charity work; today they serve as architects of social change, working to empower individuals while strengthening families and communities.

Through defending and advocating for clients, Social Workers help create opportunities for transformation—not only in the lives of individuals but also across families and communities. Even in the face of systemic challenges and bureaucracy, Social Workers remain committed to recognizing the humanity in every individual and being a voice for those who may otherwise go unheard.

Residents can stay tuned to the ongoing activities for the month, which will include: a Social Media Campaign, through the Community Development and Culture Department’s Facebook page, an Open House at the Water Rock Building, Community Development - Social Domain on Friday, March 20th from 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM, amongst other activities to promote awareness of social work services on Saba.

Zorg en Jeugd Caribisch Nederland (ZJCN), also known as, Youth Care and Family Supervision Caribbean Netherlands is also committed to improving the position of children on Bonaire, Saba, and Statia in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, so that children can develop into full citizens. ZJCN focuses on caring for children whose development is threatened, ensuring that the preconditions of safety, basic needs, and developmental conditions are met, using a customized approach.

Similarly, the Community Development and Culture Department (OLS) is dedicated to improving the well-being and quality of life on Saba by providing opportunities for economic, cultural, and social participation. Through an integrated approach, the department assists those in need, advocates on their behalf, and works to empower the community while fostering Saba’s cultural identity.

As Social Work Month is observed globally, Social Workers on Saba reaffirm their commitment to uplifting individuals, defending the rights of the vulnerable, and transforming communities in pursuit of a more just and equitable society.
