Saba's Schoolhousing Project: Demolition of the Gym Starts this Summer

The Public Entity Saba is thrilled to announce a significant step in its School housing Project for St. Johns: the demolition of the existing gym building will officially start this summer. This important first step paves the way for the construction of a state-of-the-art sports complex and a new Technical School in St. Johns.

This project underscores the commitment of the Public Entity, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW), and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), to provide modern, safe, and inspiring facilities for educational and athletic development on the island.

Following a public tender process, publicized earlier this year, the government is finalizing an agreement with Ross Contracting Services. Their initial task is to safely demolish the current gymnasium, clearing the site for the subsequent construction of the new gym and the Technical School.

Ensuring Continued Physical Education

To ensure a smooth transition, Saba's Sports Department, working closely with local schools and physical education (PE) teachers, has started sorting and storing all gym equipment. This will guarantee that PE classes will continue without interruption, temporarily relocating to various alternative locations starting with the new school year. Schools will provide specific details regarding these arrangements to students and parents. Additionally, the Department of Public Health & Sport has already upgraded existing sports facilities in The Bottom, ensuring they are fully prepared for use during this transitional period.

A Step-by-Step, Sustainable Demolition

Before demolition commenced, all reusable materials from the old gym building were carefully removed and saved for other projects, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability. In close cooperation with the Waste Facility, all demolition waste will be efficiently separated, managed and disposed of in the best way possible.

By strategically scheduling the demolition during the summer recess, the project prioritizes student safety and aims to minimize any disruption to their education. The Public Entity acknowledges the potential for disturbance to surrounding residents and the wider St. Johns community during this period and will make every effort to minimize inconvenience.

To ensure the safety of personal property, the Public Entity kindly requests that the community not park any vehicles in the front or back school parking areas during the summer break. This will help prevent any potential damage to vehicles due to demolition activities.

The demolition of the old gym is a pivotal first step in our mission to equip Saba's schools, sports associations, and individual users with a modern, safe, and inspiring environment for physical education and extracurricular activities for years to come.
