Representatives from Saba attend ProDemos Workshop

From March 4 to 7, Island Council Members Vito Charles and Saskia Matthew, accompanied by Island Registrar Akilah Levenstone and Policy Advisor for Culture and Education Shaigan Marten, participated in a ProDemos workshop held in Sint Eustatius.

This project is a collaboration between the Public Entity, ProDemos and the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK).

The workshop followed a Train-the-Trainer model, with ProDemos providing an educational outline for (school-going) youth, with the aim of allowing students to experience democracy in action and explore how the rule of law functions. Programs are applicable to both primary and secondary schools, with upcoming plans for coordination and implementation.

The program covers a range of topics, including how political decision making occurs in the Public Entity, and how the court system functions. To encourage engagement, students will participate in role-plays of an island council meeting and a court hearing. Island Council members will also be invited to join these sessions, giving students the opportunity to ask them questions.

With this initiative, respect for and knowledge of democratic rule of law can be better promoted on Saba, while fostering a stronger sense of citizenship within our young people.
