Public Health Strengthens Mental Health Support with Training and Collaborative Efforts

Public Health Department Saba is proud to announce significant strides in its commitment to enhance community mental health wellbeing, highlighted by a successful Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training held last week June 9th & 10th, 2025. This initiative underscores a broader strategic focus by Public Health to foster mental health awareness and establish a robust, collaborative framework for future interventions, always with and for the community of Saba.

The intensive MHFA training, skillfully delivered by certified trainer Elton Villarreal, equipped participants with vital skills to identify, understand, and appropriately respond to signs of mental health challenges and substance use disorders. This program empowers individuals to provide initial support and guide their peers, family, and neighbors toward professional help, thereby strengthening the community's collective capacity for compassionate care and improved mental health wellbeing. The crucial training saw participation from various key community organizations, including representatives from Comprehensive School Saba, Saba Reach Foundation, The Community Development and Culture Department, the Public Health and Sports Department, and Absolute Child Care.

"Empowering our frontline professionals and community members with Mental Health First Aid skills is a critical step in destigmatizing mental health issues and building a more supportive environment for everyone in our community," stated Menno Bakker, Head of Public Health Department. "This training enables immediate, informed assistance, which can make a great difference in someone's mental health wellbeing."

In parallel with these impactful training efforts, Public Health is diligently refining a comprehensive framework for mental health wellbeing designed to serve the entire community. This strategic document is being developed through a highly collaborative process, already benefiting from two productive multi-stakeholder meetings. These discussions have actively engaged diverse perspectives from key community leaders, healthcare providers, and social support organizations to shape a holistic and effective pathway for future mental health wellbeing initiatives, ensuring they are truly tailored to the unique needs of our community.

Public Health's ongoing commitment extends to fostering an environment where mental health wellbeing is openly discussed and supported across all community sectors. In collaboration with the Community Development and Culture Department, our upcoming outreach efforts will promote awareness and inspire action under the slogan: “Speak. Ask. Belong. Accept.” This mantra reflects our dedication to creating an inclusive and accepting atmosphere for discussions about mental health within our community. We aim to normalize speaking openly about mental health challenges, encourage individuals to ask for help and seek understanding without shame, promote a strong sense of community and belonging, and foster acceptance of oneself, others, and the full range of mental health experiences.

Further details regarding future mental health awareness campaigns will be disseminated in the coming weeks. Public Health encourages all community members to engage with these vital initiatives as we work together for a healthier, more supportive future.
