Hyacinth House Restoration Begins

Renovations and restoration to The Hyacinth House, located in the heart of Windwardside, have begun this week.

Following an open tender procedure, a local contractor with experience in renovating historic Saban cottages was selected to carry out this renovation.

During this first phase of the restoration, the shingles have been removed from the outer walls, uncovering that some of the old wood is in a bad condition and will need to be replaced. To preserve the authentic character of the cottage, the façade will be finished with new wooden shingles.

The full scope of the renovation will include a new roof and windows, repairing the shutters and repainting the building. Upgrades will be made to the interior, including adding insulation and replacing the electrical system. A traditional porch and Saban gingerbread roof are also envisioned, in order to honor the distinguishing features of Saban cottages.

The main renovation work on the exterior of the building is estimated to be completed before July with interior finishes to be completed by September. In future, the cottage will be utilized as additional office space for the Public Entity.
