Governor Selection Procedure announced on Saba

During today’s Island Council meeting, the formal procedure for appointing a new Island Governor was officially announced, along with the establishment of the Confidentiality Committee.

The announcement was made in the presence of acting Kingdom Representative Jan Helmond, who provided additional context surrounding the selection process.

Following Island Governor Jonathan Johnson’s announcement of his departure on July 3, 2025, preparations have been underway to facilitate a smooth transition. A key step in this process has been the development of a profile sketch for the new Governor, created with direct input from the Island Council and Executive Council members during several meetings and workshops which were held in close collaboration with the Acting Kingdom Representative.

In today’s meeting, the significant role of the Governor was also reinforced, focused on upholding democracy and safeguarding integrity. Other important considerations mentioned were a strong moral character, crisis management and a deep connection to Saba.

The vacancy for the position of Island Governor will be published via various platforms on October 31, 2025, until November 30, 2025. The new Island Governor will take office on July 1st, 2026.

As stipulated by both national legislation and island ordinance, the Confidentiality Committee cannot answer questions or share any details about the process. This strict confidentiality applies both during and after the Governor selection process.

Any additional questions can be directed to the Acting Kingdom Representative’s office at rijksvertegenwoordiger@rijksdienstCN.com
