Commissioner of Education calls on Island Council to fulfil their role in education

During today’s Central Committee meeting, Commissioner of Education Eviton Heyliger called on all Island Council members to fulfil their role in education, as it relates to the functioning of the Saba Comprehensive School.

Over the past months, PES has worked closely with the interim board of SCS to address longstanding issues facing our educational system. With recent developments, updated statutes have been formed, a new governance model has been structured, and candidates have been proposed for the Supervisory Board. Due to these positive changes, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has decided to not give a formal instruction (aanwijzing) to the school at this point.

However, Commissioner Heyliger stressed that the positive momentum gained and the upcoming changes are now under threat if the Island Council does not take on their role in approving the new statutes and the appointments for the board of the SCS.

“It is important that each of us recognizes the weight of our shared responsibility,” said Commissioner Heyliger. He continued by stating that if any future instruction is given by the Ministry, it will no longer simply fall on the school, its staff or its board, but it will also assess how the Island Council has taken up their role.

“It is time to step up, to act decisively, and to move forward together,” Commissioner Heyliger concluded.
