Chairman of the State Commission against Discrimination and Racism visits Saba

On August 23rd, Chairman Dr. Joyce Sylvester of the State Commission against Discrimination and Racism and Research Associate Dr. Sarah-Jane Koulen were welcomed to Saba by Island Governor Jonathan Johnson.

This visit served as a follow up to a meeting held in June when delegations from the BES islands met with the Commission in The Hague. During that meeting, various topics impacting the Dutch Caribbean were explored, as well as possibilities for stronger measures to prevent discrimination in both the European and Caribbean Netherlands. Discussions held today centered on how people on Saba experience discrimination particularly by the government or government policy.

“It’s important for me to be here and hear the experiences in person, to understand the relationship between Saba and the national government and to explore what can be improved in the near future,” stated Dr. Sylvester.

PES looks forward to continuing dialogue with the State Commission in the future, in order to promote equality and strengthen governance.
