Saba – The Public Entity Saba, through the Department of Community Development & Culture and spearheaded by Domestic Safety Advisor Ms. Ramona Berkel, proudly welcomed the Breaking the Chokehold team to the island for a week-long initiative aimed at addressing and preventing domestic violence.
In a bold, proactive, and compassionate move, the Government of Saba has embraced the transformative campaign Breaking the Chokehold, anchored by the powerful and internationally acclaimed film Chokehold, directed by award-winning filmmaker Joel Ayuk. The film, a compelling exploration of domestic abuse and its ripple effects on communities, served as the centerpiece of an interactive awareness-raising campaign designed to inspire healing, dialogue, and collective action.
The campaign officially launched with a dignitary screening and stakeholder forum. The event featured an exclusive viewing of Chokehold followed by a dynamic panel discussion that fostered open conversation around domestic violence, its underlying causes, and the path toward a safer, more resilient Saba.
In his opening remarks, Communication Specialist Herbert Martina acknowledged the distinguished presence of His Excellency Governor of Saba Mr. Jonathan Johnson and his wife, Mrs. Rosalyn Johnson, as well as His Excellency Governor of Bonaire Mr. John Soliano, who was on-island for a justice-focused work visit. Other notable attendees included Deputy Island Secretary Ms. Michelle Van Duin, Island Council Members Mr. Vito Charles and Ms. Elsa Peterson, and several key community leaders.
Ms. Ramona Berkel extended heartfelt thanks to the Government of Saba for embracing this initiative and expressed deep appreciation to Joel Ayuk and the entire Breaking the Chokehold team for dedicating a week to engage with seniors, youth, and the broader community.
"This campaign is not just about the film—it’s about creating a movement where healing can begin, conversations can be safe, and silence can be broken,” said Ms. Berkel. “To the people of Saba, stay tuned for additional activities and announcements regarding time and dates.”
The Breaking the Chokehold campaign continues to amplify awareness, promote survivor-centered support, and strengthen community resilience in the face of domestic violence.
