Becoming more self-sufficient
With much of the food consumed on island being imported, a necessary step for Saba to become more self-sufficient is to grow a portion of the food locally. This is done on the island through, for example, the hydroponics farm project, the Hell’s Gate farm and the reforestation project, as Public Entity Saba aims to increase food security.
In addition to this fruit tree distribution on December 14, PES will provide seeds and seedlings for vegetable and herb plants to promote backyard farming. By further encouraging backyard farming, PES hopes to create a culture of self-sufficiency and resilience among the residents of Saba. This initiative not only helps to diversify the local food supply but also promotes healthier eating habits and reduces the community's reliance on imported produce.
Last year, PES carried out a pilot project to promote backyard farming. Through the pilot project, residents received financial assistance to help set up their own backyard farming systems to be able to grow food for themselves and their families.
The distribution of these fruit trees, seeds and seedlings is a continuation of the PES’ efforts to further increase local food production through the promotion of backyard farming.
